Five tourists tragically lost their lives during a cave dive in the Maldives when they were just moments away from reaching the surface. The victims, all Italian nationals, were identified as Monica Montefalcone, 52, a marine biologist from the University of Genoa, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, 20, researcher Muriel Oddenino, 31, recent graduate Federico Gualtieri, 31, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.
Reports indicated that the group disappeared approximately 15 minutes from the surface and were later discovered lifeless without proper diving gear. Unfortunately, Maldivian rescue diver Staff Sgt Mohamed Mahdhee also lost his life during the search for their bodies.
According to Maldivian presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Sharee, the cave’s depth is so extreme that even experienced divers do not attempt to explore it with the best equipment available.
In a tragic turn of events on May 14, the group perished 200 feet below the sea surface due to what was described as a “tragic human error.” Finnish diver Sami Paakkarinen, involved in recovering the bodies, highlighted that lack of appropriate cave-diving equipment, such as a diving reel or guided rope, was a critical factor. He mentioned that four bodies were retrieved together, while Gualtieri’s body was recovered on the day of the incident and repatriated to Italy, with the other victims found later.
Experts pointed out that the fatalities might have been related to oxygen toxicity and panic. Pulmonologist Claudio Micheletto suggested that issues with the tanks possibly led to the tragic outcome, emphasizing the dangers of oxygen toxicity during dives.
Scuba divers typically breathe a mix of 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen from a tank, but using a higher-oxygen mix like nitrox can pose risks, especially when diving deep. Oxygen toxicity can result in symptoms like dizziness and disorientation, hindering the ability to resurface safely.
Alfonso Bolognini, president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, emphasized the potential dangers inside caves at significant depths, where visibility issues and panic can lead to fatal errors.
The exact events that transpired at the underwater cave remain unclear, with investigations ongoing to determine the sequence of events that led to this tragic loss of life.
