A brave diver involved in a daring rescue mission shared details of the harrowing task of retrieving bodies from a shark-inhabited cave in the Maldives.
Sami Paakkarinen, a Finnish diver, participated in the operation to recover the remains of four Italian individuals who perished while exploring deep underwater caves. The bodies of Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri, Monia Montefalcone, and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal were discovered near the entrance of a third chamber within the cave.
The group’s diving instructor, Gianluca Benedetti, was also located in proximity to the same chamber’s entrance. Despite initial suspicions, Sami dismissed the notion that the group had been engulfed by the shark-infested cave.
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Sami refuted claims of the group being sucked into the cave, stating that it was implausible given the cave’s vast size. He countered a theory proposed by Alfonso Bolognini, the president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, suggesting that a strong current might have dragged the divers into the narrow entrance of the cavern.
Sami, drawing from his own diving experience, emphasized the predictable nature of currents in coral reefs, stating that the water flow inside the cave exhibited consistent patterns. He described feeling a mild current upon reaching the cave, clarifying that while there was movement in and out of the cave, it was not forceful enough to pull anyone in.
The diver highlighted that the Dhekunu Kandu cave had not been previously charted, requiring specialized equipment and techniques for exploration at such depths. He contended that accidental entry into the cave was highly unlikely, given the distinctive transition from daylight to darkness upon entering.
Following the recovery of the bodies, Giorgia’s boyfriend shared a poignant message he had conveyed to her before her ill-fated dive. Sami suggested that a phenomenon known as the “sand wall illusion” could have played a role in the tragic incident.
Additional divers, collaborating with the research organization Dan Europe, speculated that the group may have taken a wrong path while trying to navigate their way out of the cave dubbed “shark cave.”
