A military enthusiast with a passion for historical aviation has constructed a replica Lancaster Bomber cockpit in his backyard shed. Inspired by The Dam Busters film, Leon Ellison dedicated his retirement years to meticulously recreating the flight deck, complete with authentic gauges, dials, and pilot controls. To enhance the experience, he even replicated the distinct sound of the bomber’s engines using specialized equipment.

Leon, an electronics engineer, undertook the ambitious project after being captivated by the iconic Second World War aircraft featured in The Dam Busters. Over two decades of research and another 20 years of construction went into the detailed model, which was housed in a custom-built hangar in his Binfield, Berkshire home.

Upon Leon’s passing in June 2024, his family decided to donate the cockpit to the RAF Metheringham Airfield visitor center in Lincolnshire, a historical location associated with the Lancaster Bombers. The cockpit will be transformed into a state-of-the-art simulator, offering visitors a firsthand experience of the daring Dam Busters missions during World War II.

Leon’s son, Adrian, expressed how proud his father would have been to see his passion project come to life. Adrian recalled his father’s lifelong dedication to studying Lancasters, visiting existing models, and meticulously documenting the aircraft’s details. Despite Leon’s untimely death at 77, his family ensured that his legacy lived on by transporting the cockpit to its new home.

Adrian reminisced about his father’s commitment to the project, noting that Leon spent countless hours conducting research, sourcing original materials, and meticulously constructing the cockpit. The only components not crafted by Leon were laser-cut struts, emphasizing the level of detail and dedication put into the project.

Reflecting on his father’s dream of creating a simulator to educate others about Lancasters, Adrian expressed pride in seeing the cockpit find its place at the RAF visitor center. Ian Brett, from the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre, commended the cockpit as an impressive piece of engineering, acknowledging Leon’s passion and craftsmanship.
