A father of two, Steven McClusky, 40, found himself in a harrowing escalator accident at Davis Station in Massachusetts. He got trapped in the escalator machinery after a misstep while getting off. Shocking CCTV footage reveals multiple passersby ignoring his struggle to break free, with some even pausing briefly before moving on.
McClusky’s coat got entangled in the escalator mechanism as he stumbled, leading to a life-threatening situation. Despite his frantic attempts to free himself, the jacket tightened around his neck, impeding his breathing, and eventually causing him to collapse.
Emergency services found McClusky pinned at the escalator’s base, unresponsive and with his clothing tightly stuck in the steps. It took over 20 minutes for an employee to reach the scene and activate the emergency stop.
Paramedics administered CPR on site before rushing McClusky to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remained in a coma for 10 days until succumbing to his injuries on March 9. His father fondly remembered him as a devoted father to his two sons, Shayne and Steven.
The MBTA labeled the incident a “terrible accident” and emphasized the importance of aiding individuals in distress. However, McClusky’s family insists on the transport authority taking responsibility for his tragic demise.
His sister Shannon Flaherty expressed her desire for accountability, stating, “That’s the main thing I don’t want — for them to say they did nothing wrong.” An ongoing investigation is underway to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
