A tragic incident occurred at Davis Station in Boston as a 40-year-old father of two, Steven McCluskey, lost his life in a horrifying escalator accident. The unfortunate event took place shortly before 5 am on February 27, as McCluskey lost his balance while descending the escalator. Shocking footage released by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) revealed that over a dozen individuals walked past him without offering assistance while he was in distress.
Despite McCluskey’s visible struggle at the bottom of the escalator, bystanders continued on their way, with one man even pausing briefly before leaving the scene. His coat became ensnared in the escalator, leading to a life-threatening situation as he attempted to free himself to no avail.
As the situation intensified, McCluskey’s clothing tightened around his neck, impairing his ability to breathe. Eventually, he collapsed and lay motionless on the escalator. Approximately 20 minutes later, an employee arrived and halted the escalator, allowing medics to attend to the scene.
Emergency responders found McCluskey trapped at the base of the escalator, unresponsive and entangled in the machinery. Firefighters discovered that his back had been pulled into the escalator, prompting concerns that dismantling the escalator might be necessary to extricate him.
McCluskey, who had battled drug addiction in recent years, fought for his life in a coma for ten days at Massachusetts General Hospital before succumbing to his injuries on March 9. A skilled carpenter, he was described as a devoted father to his two young sons, Shayne and Steven, cherishing his role as a parent above all else.
Following his tragic death, McCluskey’s family has urged the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to investigate the circumstances and hold the MBTA accountable for the incident. The family mourns the loss of a beloved father, brother, and son who was deeply committed to his loved ones and his craft.
