A father shared the heartbreaking story of his son’s battle with meningitis, expressing deep sorrow over the young student’s passing. Sean Walters posted emotional photos of his son, Lewis, who tragically succumbed to the illness at a hospital in Reading, Berkshire.

In a heartfelt message, Sean described the swift deterioration of Lewis’s health, leading to sepsis within hours of feeling unwell. Despite the valiant efforts of the intensive care unit team, Lewis could not be saved, leaving the family devastated. Known for his humor and kindness, Lewis was a beloved individual who cherished inclusivity and playful interactions with his family.

The community of Henley-on-Thames and Henley College in Oxfordshire mourn the loss of Lewis, a student who touched many lives. Additionally, two other students from Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre are undergoing treatment for meningitis.

Expressing profound loss, Sean highlighted Lewis’s love for his family and friends, acknowledging the irreplaceable void left by his absence. Henley College’s principal, Simon Spearman, extended condolences to Lewis’s loved ones, emphasizing support for the college community in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency.

Tests confirmed that the meningitis strain affecting the students differs from the previous outbreak in Kent. Dr. Rachel Mearkle, a health protection consultant, offered condolences and reassurance, emphasizing the rarity of large outbreaks. Close contacts have received precautionary antibiotic treatment, with public health advice shared among affected schools.

Awareness campaigns on meningitis symptoms have been intensified, stressing the importance of prompt medical attention for high-risk groups. Dr. Mearkle underscored the treatability of meningococcal disease if detected early, urging vigilance for any concerning symptoms.
