A disturbing video captured the moment a teenager riding an e-bike under the influence of drugs fled the scene after fatally striking an elderly woman on a pedestrian crossing.
Billy Stokoe, 19, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for causing the death of 86-year-old Gloria Stephenson in Sunderland. Stokoe, who was speeding, high on cannabis, and distracted by his phone, collided with Ms. Stephenson, causing her immediate death.
Surveillance cameras recorded the tragic incident, showing Stokoe hitting Ms. Stephenson, falling from his illegal bike, briefly checking on the victim, and then escaping the scene. He later turned himself in to the authorities, displaying a lack of remorse.
During the court hearing, Stokoe admitted to the charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving an uninsured vehicle. He will serve at least half of his sentence and face a five-year driving ban upon release.
The family of Ms. Stephenson mourned the loss of a vibrant and independent great-grandmother who had a passion for life. They criticized Stokoe for his callous actions and lack of regret, highlighting his insensitive behavior following the incident.
Northumbria Police, investigating the case, described Stokoe’s reckless riding behavior as a disaster waiting to happen, emphasizing the dangers posed by high-speed e-bikes on public roads. The authorities urged for stricter regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
