A nanny with over two decades of experience has been linked to the death of a baby due to an overdose of antihistamines. The Metropolitan Police discovered the infant unresponsive in his crib on January 15, 2024, with no apparent cause of death initially evident. However, a toxicology report later revealed the presence of a sedative antihistamine in the baby’s system.

Identified as Sandra Davidson, the night nanny responsible for the baby’s care was found to have administered chlorphenamine to sedate the restless and frequently waking infant. Investigations also revealed a partially consumed bottle of liquid Piriton at Davidson’s residence. While Davidson claimed to undergo regular training, the tragic incident has prompted demands for stricter regulations in the nanny industry, which currently lacks oversight compared to other childcare sectors.

Davidson, who was affiliated with the family through the Night Nannies agency, had her name disclosed following a court ruling due to the high public interest in the case. The agency, which does not directly employ nannies, mandates strict requirements such as background checks, references, and first aid training for its affiliated nannies, prohibiting medication administration.

Despite no signs of foul play or neglect, the coroner’s report revealed that the baby’s environment was orderly. However, concerns were raised about the police’s failure to seize potential evidence, such as medications at the scene. The court accepted expert opinions suggesting that chlorphenamine could have contributed to the baby’s death, although conclusive evidence was lacking.

The National Nanny Association has advocated for enhanced regulation, including mandatory background checks and standardized training, emphasizing the need for ongoing professional development. The association stressed that the incident reflects broader systemic issues within the industry and called for the establishment of a national registry to verify nanny qualifications.

In response to the coroner’s concerns, the Metropolitan Police expressed condolences to the baby’s family but refrained from further comments at this stage. The tragedy has underscored the urgency for industry-wide reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of children under the care of nannies.
