The high-stakes China summit has been marred by escalating tensions as the focus remains on the leaders of the US and China.

President Trump and Xi Jinping engaged in discussions covering contentious topics such as the Iran conflict, trade, technology, and Taiwan.

During a state banquet, Trump emphasized the “deep sense of mutual respect” between the US and China, but off-stage relations between the two nations have shown signs of deterioration throughout the state visit.

Incidents behind the scenes, including a reported ‘standoff’ and a White House staffer being trampled by Chinese journalists, have characterized the trip as chaotic.

One such incident occurred when Chinese press members barged into a meeting between Trump and Xi, resulting in the staffer’s injury. Although there were protests from the American side, no serious injuries were reported.

Further clashes ensued as members of Trump’s Secret Service encountered resistance from Chinese officials when trying to enter a historic Beijing temple due to a firearm possession issue.

Reportedly, a heated standoff occurred on the first day of the state visit, causing delays as US and Chinese officials debated the entry of the press corps into the temple complex.

Amidst the tensions, American reporters were held briefly by Chinese security, prompting one to shout for urgency. Subsequently, Chinese officials chased the US delegation to Trump’s convoy of cars.

These incidents contrasted the more peaceful interactions between Xi and Trump during a tour of the historic temple, where they discussed tense bilateral issues.

Xi cautioned that mishandling these issues could lead to conflicts, emphasizing the need for proper management to maintain stable bilateral relations.
