Italian authorities detained a British man who was in close proximity to a woman who later died from contracting hantavirus, as they work to control the escalating outbreak. The man, along with his companion, was apprehended in Milan and taken to Sacco Hospital for quarantine until June 6, despite testing negative for the disease and showing no symptoms.
The British individual, believed to be in his 60s, shared a flight with Mirjam Schilperoord, 69, who tragically succumbed to the virus. Mirjam, wife of patient zero Leo Schilperoord, contracted the disease after visiting a landfill in Argentina. The hantavirus outbreak, originating on a Dutch cruise ship, has led to 11 confirmed cases among passengers, resulting in three fatalities.
Leo and Mirjam, residents of Haulerwijk in the Netherlands, had been on a lengthy South American trip before boarding the MV Hondius. They visited a landfill near Ushuaia, where it is believed they contracted the hantavirus strain from infected rodents. Shortly after departing on the cruise ship, Leo fell ill and subsequently passed away on board, with his body later disembarked in St Helena.
Global health authorities are on high alert following the hantavirus outbreak, emphasizing the need for stringent monitoring and control measures. The World Health Organization anticipates a potential increase in cases due to the virus’s extended incubation period and the close interactions among cruise passengers.
Mirjam, after witnessing her husband’s demise on the ship, also fell ill and was denied travel clearance from South Africa to Amsterdam. She was rushed to a local hospital but unfortunately passed away a day later. Another passenger from the cruise, a German national, also lost their life to the virus.
