“Princess of Wales Promotes Slow Living for Children”

The Princess of Wales emphasized the importance of encouraging children to embrace a slower pace of life in today’s fast-moving world during her recent trip to Italy, where she highlighted initiatives focusing on early childhood development.

During her visit to the renowned Loris Malaguzzi International Centre in Reggio Emilia, Kate Middleton engaged with educators and practitioners who implement the “Reggio Emilia approach,” which prioritizes social and emotional growth in children. Exploring the center’s “light atelier,” a space designed to stimulate interaction and play among children, Kate noted the significance of slowing down in a world filled with rapid stimuli.

Sharing her own experiences, Kate mentioned engaging in similar activities with children during lockdown, emphasizing the value of exploring colors and textures to enhance sensory experiences. She was warmly welcomed by the center’s staff and expressed her eagerness to delve deeper into their work, highlighting the excitement of finally visiting a place she had long desired to explore.

Established in 2006, the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre serves as a hub for researchers, educators, and families interested in creativity, research, and documenting children’s learning experiences. The center, named after Italian psychologist and educator Loris Malaguzzi, attracts over 130,000 visitors annually seeking to understand and incorporate the Reggio Emilia philosophy into their educational practices.

Kate participated in a clay workshop led by an atelierista, where she actively engaged in hands-on activities, underscoring the importance of tactile experiences for children’s development. Referencing her Shaping Us campaign, which utilized clay to convey early childhood narratives, Kate highlighted the enduring impact of fostering creativity and connection from an early age.

As her visit concluded, Kate interacted with a group of delegates from Latin America keen on learning about the Reggio Emilia approach, emphasizing the value of a philosophy over a rigid framework. Reflecting on her enriching experience at the center, Kate expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity to immerse herself in innovative educational practices.
