A 66-year-old ex-primary school teacher, John Field, has been permanently barred from teaching for accessing illicit images of children as young as five from the dark web. Field, who admitted to police that he had been searching for sexual images of young girls for approximately five years using terms like “teens” and “jailbait,” was convicted in October 2024 on three counts of possessing indecent images of children.

During the investigation, authorities found that Field had downloaded eight Category A images, the most severe category, along with five Category B images and 16 Category C images. In January 2025, he received a 16-month suspended prison sentence and a 10-year registration on the sex offender list.

Following a review by the Teachers Regulation Agency, Field’s teaching ban was made indefinite. The agency’s professional conduct panel considered his statements to detectives in April 2023, where he admitted to accessing such material using various methods, including peer-to-peer networks and the dark web. Despite claiming to have undergone courses to address his behavior, Field failed to provide supporting evidence to the panel.

Field expressed some remorse in his responses, acknowledging his actions as “unforgivable” and stating efforts to rectify his behavior. However, the panel noted his limited insight into the impact of his actions on the victims. The panel deemed Field’s actions as extremely serious, given the duration and severity of his offenses, the ages of the victims depicted, and his targeted search terms like “teens” and “jailbait.”

Concluding the case, decision maker Stuart Blomfield announced that Field is permanently prohibited from teaching and cannot seek restoration of his teaching eligibility due to the gravity of the allegations against him.
