A woman was surprised to find her usually independent sausage dog behaving unusually clingy, only to later discover that the dog had sensed her cancer diagnosis. Meg Jones, a 26-year-old who initially thought her leg pain was due to sciatica, noticed her dachshund Samson becoming more affectionate and wanting to be close to her. When a rash appeared on her leg, she sought medical help, leading to the diagnosis of acute leukemia at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.
Following chemotherapy and remission in October 2024, Meg’s cancer returned in July 2025. However, after undergoing CAR T-cell therapy in November 2025, she is now cancer-free. Meg attributed Samson’s unusual behavior to sensing her illness, as the dog became more protective and affectionate as her condition progressed. She also experienced symptoms such as night sweats, eczema, and unusual reactions to alcohol, which she later realized were related to her cancer diagnosis.
Despite the challenges of her treatment, Meg is encouraging others to pay attention to unusual symptoms and advocate for themselves. She noted the difficulty of adjusting socially due to the treatment’s impact on her cognitive abilities. Meg emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice for any concerning symptoms and being proactive about one’s health.
