Passengers aboard the MV Hondius, affected by the Hantavirus outbreak, are being likened to “prisoners at sea” by a legal representative who previously handled cases from the well-known 2013 ‘Poop Cruise’ incident. Maritime law expert Frank Spagnoletti has raised concerns amid the escalating global alarm surrounding the health crisis on the cruise ship. Drawing parallels to the 2013 Carnival Triumph “poop cruise” calamity, where 4,000 individuals were stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for days with malfunctioning toilets and power outages, Spagnoletti highlighted the distressing conditions faced by passengers on the MV Hondius.

The distressing scenes of sewage leakage, passengers resorting to sleeping on the deck, and the chaotic environment onboard shocked the world and became a significant moment in the history of the cruise industry. The lack of air conditioning led to unbearable heat and humidity inside the ship, prompting numerous passengers to seek refuge on open decks to escape the oppressive conditions.

Despite limited communication with the outside world, reports of the ship’s dire situation quickly spread, with images and accounts of the stranded vessel gaining widespread attention in international media circles. Spagnoletti emphasized that while the 2013 incident was triggered by an engine fire, the psychological toll on those aboard the MV Hondius bears unsettling similarities.

In an interview with the Mirror, Spagnoletti expressed, “Passengers found themselves in a situation where they were essentially confined on the ship, devoid of control over their lives or future. Such circumstances can lead to severe emotional distress with physical repercussions and enduring implications.” Spagnoletti, who aided in securing compensations for the “poop cruise” victims, explained that during serious health crises on cruise ships, stringent quarantine measures are typically enforced.

Addressing the concerns of stranded passengers about post-disembarkation financial matters, Spagnoletti noted that cruise operators tend to reference the terms outlined in passenger tickets to determine entitlements. While initial compensation may align with these terms, companies might also provide additional support to avoid protracted legal battles.

The lawyer cautioned passengers to scrutinize the fine print, highlighting that cruise operators could leverage contractual clauses to evade potential lawsuits. He stressed the importance of preserving evidence, such as videos and photos capturing the ship’s conditions and communication with the operators, for potential legal actions in the future. Despite the legal complexities surrounding cruise ship lawsuits, Spagnoletti mentioned that many cases lead to settlements, underlining the potential for improved safety standards within the cruise industry following such incidents.
