Passengers trapped on the ill-fated cruise ship infected with the Hantavirus reportedly organized a large barbecue event, seemingly oblivious to the unfolding crisis, according to a passenger still stranded aboard the vessel.

The MV Hondius cruise ship has tragically recorded three fatalities linked to the suspected deadly outbreak, with one British individual remaining in critical condition in a South African intensive care unit after testing positive for the virus. Another passenger, 56-year-old retired police officer Martin Anstee, is currently in stable condition in a Dutch hospital.

The World Health Organization has confirmed five cases of Hantavirus among the passengers, out of the eight reported cases so far. Authorities are urgently trying to locate numerous individuals who disembarked on St. Helena in the South Atlantic.

The luxury liner is now en route to the Canary Islands, where it is scheduled to dock over the upcoming weekend. A French passenger shared concerns about the situation, indicating that although guests are not confined to their cabins, mask-wearing is strictly enforced.

Despite the escalating apprehension among passengers, one individual mentioned that there was a sense of unease as they gathered for meals in the ship’s restaurant. Notably, social distancing measures have been recently introduced, with patrons seated in a staggered arrangement.

Following the alarming events, British passengers on board are expected to undergo a 45-day self-isolation period upon their return, as advised by health officials.

Among the passengers who disembarked from the afflicted vessel, seven holidaymakers were among the 30 individuals who left after a Dutch man succumbed to the virus, subsequently leading to his wife testing positive and passing away.

Oceanwide Expeditions released a statement detailing the ship’s journey and current destination, ensuring that no symptomatic cases are present on board. The company is in close coordination with authorities to determine the arrival protocols, quarantine procedures, and screening processes.

The ship’s owners disclosed that 114 passengers embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, with 30 individuals disembarking on Saint Helena on April 24, including the deceased passenger. Efforts are underway to trace all passengers and crew who have boarded or left the MV Hondius since March 20.

Regarding one of the infected passengers, Martin Anstee, his wife expressed relief that he is recovering after a turbulent period of illness. She mentioned the rapid and unpredictable nature of the virus but conveyed that his condition has stabilized.

In a separate development, a man who was not aboard the stricken cruise liner but shared a flight with an infected individual is suspected to have contracted the virus. The French passenger is under close observation as a potential case after being in contact with an infected Dutch passenger during their journey.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing health risks associated with the Hantavirus outbreak, prompting health officials to maintain vigilant monitoring of potential cases to prevent further spread.
