From his hospital room in the Netherlands, 56-year-old British expedition leader Martin Anstee has become a focal point in a global health crisis. Anstee, a former police officer working on the MV Hondius cruise ship, is now a prominent figure in an unusual Hantavirus outbreak involving person-to-person transmission. This outbreak has resulted in three deaths and has prompted international action.

Speaking to Sky News from his isolation ward, Anstee mentioned his current condition, stating he is “not doing too bad” and uncertain about the duration of his hospital stay. He indicated that doctors will have a better understanding of his situation in the upcoming week.

While Anstee’s condition remains stable, medical professionals are diligently working to assess his health status. Unlike typical Hantavirus strains that are transmitted through contact with rodents, this mutation appears to spread directly from human to human, causing global concern.

The source of the outbreak has been traced back to a Dutch couple who visited Ushuaia, Argentina for birdwatching. It is suspected that they were exposed to infected rodents at a landfill while photographing birds. The couple later boarded the MV Hondius on April 1, along with a diverse group of passengers and crew from 23 different countries.

The first suspected fatality, the 70-year-old Dutch male from the couple, was removed from the ship on April 24. His wife traveled to South Africa where she tragically passed away at Johannesburg airport. Another death, a German national, has been reported, bringing the total fatalities to three, with eight confirmed cases. The confirmed cases have been evacuated from the cruise ship to the Netherlands for treatment.

The situation has escalated into an international emergency as a French passenger, who shared a flight with an infected Dutch passenger from the MV Hondius, is now being monitored for signs of the disease. This passenger was unaware of the infection at the time of the flight.

Airlink, the carrier of the flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg, is cooperating with health authorities to locate passengers. With three confirmed deaths linked to the cruise ship outbreak, investigations in Argentina are ongoing to determine the origin of the outbreak, focusing on rodent trapping and analysis in Ushuaia, the ship’s port of departure.

Argentina has a history of high rates of the rodent-borne disease, as reported by the World Health Organization.
