“Shell’s Profits Soar Amid Rising Energy Costs”

Shell has joined the ranks of oil and gas companies reporting significant profits, coinciding with a noticeable increase in energy costs for consumers. The company amassed nearly £5.1 billion in the first quarter of this year, benefiting from heightened oil and gas prices due to the Iran conflict. Despite a 4% drop in oil and gas output from the previous quarter, attributed to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran causing damage to its Qatari gas plant, Shell’s profits more than doubled from the previous quarter and surpassed the earnings from a year ago.

The surge in prices is burdening ordinary households, with one in five households facing fuel poverty experiencing even more severe impacts.

Holly Donovan, a Midlands resident living with a disability, shared her experience of growing up in fuel poverty, recalling how her family struggled to afford heating, resulting in a cold home environment with constant challenges to stay warm.

Despite the passage of time, Holly’s living conditions remain challenging, with insufficient heating leading to mold and dampness in her residence. The financial strain of energy costs has forced her to ration the use of heating and other utilities, impacting her health and comfort.

Expressing frustration over the disparity between energy companies’ profits and the financial struggles of individuals like herself, Holly emphasized the urgent need to transition to renewable energy sources to combat fuel poverty effectively. She highlighted her involvement in advocating for affordable and accessible renewable energy solutions through initiatives like the Make Green Fair campaign.

Ensuring fair distribution of renewable energy benefits across society is crucial for Holly and many others facing similar challenges. She emphasized the importance of governmental support in implementing policies that promote affordable energy access and improve living conditions for individuals affected by fuel poverty.

For Holly, achieving affordable energy solutions would not only alleviate financial burdens but also enhance her quality of life by providing warmth and comfort without the fear of accumulating debt or sacrificing essential needs.

Holly Donovan is a fuel poverty campaigner with Fuel Poverty Action.
