A carjacker was fatally shot in a Texas parking lot after a driver fired to protect his family in the vehicle. Garland Police stated that the armed driver will not be charged, as the shooting was deemed self-defense.
The incident unfolded on a Sunday afternoon when the suspect crashed into two vehicles, left a green car at a nearby gas station, and tried to break into other cars. According to Lt. Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police Department, the suspect then moved to another parking lot across the street and approached a white car with occupants, including children.
The driver of the white car engaged in a struggle with the suspect as a young boy escaped to safety. After a brief scuffle, the driver retrieved his own firearm, discharged more than 10 rounds, and struck the suspect. The driver cooperated with authorities, surrendering his weapon. Police are investigating the incident as a case of self-defense and are probing the suspect’s motives.
Witness Taylor Standfield, a nearby resident, commended the driver for protecting his passengers, emphasizing the split-second decision-making required in such situations. No injuries were reported among the occupants of the targeted vehicle.
Tatiana Starks, a manager at Garland Smoke and Vape, observed the events and noted the troubled state of the suspect before the altercation. Starks expressed relief that the family emerged unharmed and praised the driver for his actions.
