Travellers in various Asian countries faced significant disruptions as leading airlines axed numerous flights and postponed a multitude of others within a single day. Thousands of individuals in Thailand, Singapore, India, China, South Korea, and Malaysia were impacted on May 7, with 194 flights canceled and 2,603 delayed.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, experienced the most severe impact with 365 delays, while Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan, saw 282 delays, ranking it as one of the most affected travel hubs in Asia.

Shanghai Airlines bore the brunt of the disruptions by canceling 58 flights, leading to significant challenges for passengers across the region. The root cause of these widespread aviation disturbances remains unclear, although airlines worldwide have expressed apprehensions regarding escalating jet fuel expenses and availability.

The disruption in jet fuel supply stemmed from the US-Iran conflict, triggered by joint strikes from the US and Israel on key Iranian facilities on February 28. Subsequently, Iran retaliated by attacking sites across the Middle East and closing the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital trade route through which 20% of global oil trade flows. This disruption in global oil supply has reverberated into the aviation sector, impacting flight operations.

Meanwhile, in the UK, travelers may encounter flight rescheduling as the government relaxes a rule rarely challenged by airlines. The Transport Department has introduced a temporary regulation allowing carriers to amalgamate flights and merge passengers to conserve jet fuel and provide a degree of certainty to holidaymakers.

This initiative aims to minimize wasted fuel from operating nearly empty flights by optimizing airport departures, potentially transferring passengers from under-booked flights onto similar services. Airlines are expected to review their schedules to streamline operations and enhance efficiency in the face of fuel supply concerns.
