A German visitor has been found guilty of causing the death of a driver in the UK by driving on the wrong side of the motorway. Matthias Hunecke, 49, was on vacation with his wife in Scotland when the incident occurred near Invermiston Falls in July 2022. Surveillance footage captured the moment Hunecke mistakenly drove their rental car onto the opposite side of the A82 highway, leading to a fatal collision with a Ducati motorcycle ridden by Michael Gall, 51.
Despite claiming memory loss regarding the incident, Hunecke admitted to realizing his mistake and trying to correct his lane position. Both Hunecke and his wife mentioned that the crash occurred shortly after a request for a roadside stop for a simple task. Mrs. Hunecke emotionally recounted the events in court, expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic outcome.
Following a jury’s swift decision, Hunecke was convicted of dangerous driving at the High Court in Inverness. The presiding judge highlighted the irrevocable loss suffered by Mr. Gall’s family due to Hunecke’s actions. Hunecke was remanded in custody pending sentencing at the High Court in Dundee, while Mr. Gall’s family expressed relief at the guilty verdict.
