Zack Polanski has acknowledged making an error by stating he was a former spokesperson for the British Red Cross. The Green Party leader faced criticism for not clarifying his actual role with the charity when he vied for the Greens’ deputy leadership in 2022.

When questioned about the matter, Mr. Polanski clarified that he organized fundraising events for the British Red Cross but conceded that he did not hold an official position. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, he explained that he spoke on behalf of the charity during fundraisers, emphasizing their impactful work on humanitarian crises, climate issues, and refugee support worldwide.

Acknowledging his mistake, Mr. Polanski admitted to using the wrong term but emphasized his active involvement in promoting the charity’s causes. He underlined that the British Red Cross maintains neutrality and does not endorse any political party, clarifying that he has ensured the removal of any misleading statements.

The London assembly member, who is of Jewish descent, criticized The Times for publishing what he deemed as an anti-Semitic cartoon and requested an apology. He expressed frustration with what he perceived as dredging up old stories, dating back a decade or more.

In older posts on Crowdfunder in 2022 and on his personal website in 2020, Mr. Polanski referred to himself as a spokesperson for the British Red Cross, advocating for issues such as combating racialized policing and the war on drugs.

The Labour Party, ahead of the upcoming local elections where the Green Party is expected to make significant advances, criticized Mr. Polanski for past misleading statements. Labour highlighted a Sun article from 2013 regarding hypnotherapy comments made by Mr. Polanski, for which he has previously apologized, attributing the idea to the journalist.

Labour’s spokesperson raised concerns about Mr. Polanski’s credibility and transparency, urging him to be forthright with the public about his actions and qualifications. The importance of trust in politics was emphasized, questioning whether Mr. Polanski’s statements were genuine or aimed at garnering attention.

A representative from the British Red Cross reiterated the organization’s commitment to impartiality and humanitarian aid, emphasizing their stance of not engaging in political activities or endorsing any specific party.
