The party aims to target regions governed by the Green Party for the implementation of its mass deportation strategy, citing the Green Party’s perceived support for open borders. Labour’s Anna Turley condemned the plans as “grotesque,” emphasizing that penalizing communities based on their political preferences undermines democratic principles. The Greens denounced the proposals as “abhorrent,” while a former Conservative minister criticized the potential misuse of ministerial authority for political gain.
Critics raised concerns about the suitability of chosen locations for detention centers based on political motives, highlighting the possibility of placing facilities in densely populated urban areas where the Green Party holds sway. Yusuf showcased the plans in a video filmed in Brighton, hinting at the city as a potential site for Reform’s proposed centers.
Reform’s contentious initiative, unveiled ahead of local elections in various parts of England, Scotland, and Wales, coincides with expectations of significant gains for insurgent parties like Reform and the Greens, while Labour faces anticipated losses.
In response to the backlash, Labour’s Turley condemned Reform’s policy as divisive and contrary to national interests, highlighting Labour’s commitment to a fair and controlled asylum system. She criticized Farage for prioritizing discord over unity.
Social media reactions further criticized Reform’s approach, with a Labour peer labeling the threat as unprecedented and a Green Party spokesperson denouncing the idea as repugnant. The former Tory MP Simon Clarke expressed concern over the political nature of the detention center placements and their potential unsuitability.
Yusuf defended the policy by emphasizing that Reform would avoid locating detention facilities in areas represented by Reform and would prioritize Green-controlled regions.
