Three individuals have passed away in the wake of a suspected virus outbreak on a cruise vessel believed to be triggered by rodent excrement. The World Health Organization has disclosed that a British citizen aboard the MV Hondius is presently in critical condition, with at least three other passengers exhibiting signs of illness.

The cruise liner, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, a Dutch travel company, was en route from Argentina to Cape Verde. As per the company’s official schedule, the ship set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20 and was scheduled to dock in Cape Verde on May 4.

Reports from South African health authorities confirm the demise of a 70-year-old male and his 69-year-old wife following their illness. The man passed away onboard, and his body was transported to Saint Helena, while his wife was evacuated to South Africa, where she succumbed in a Johannesburg hospital. Details regarding the third fatality have yet to be disclosed.

Additionally, a 69-year-old British male was airlifted to Johannesburg and is currently under intensive medical care. A representative from the South African Department of Health revealed that the individual fell ill on the ship and was admitted to a private medical facility, where he tested positive for Hantavirus.

The UK’s Foreign Office spokesperson stated that they are closely monitoring the situation of a potential hantavirus outbreak on the Hondius cruise ship and are prepared to assist British nationals if necessary. They are in contact with the cruise company and local authorities.

The World Health Organization announced its involvement in facilitating coordination among member states, the ship’s operator, and aiding in the medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers. They are conducting a comprehensive public health risk assessment and providing support to those still onboard.

Oceanwide Expeditions has provided information that the vessel measures 107.6m (353ft) in length and has a capacity to accommodate up to 170 passengers in 80 cabins.
