King Charles concluded his fast-paced visit to the United States alongside Queen Camilla after engaging in various activities in Washington DC, Virginia, and New York over a span of four days. Despite being his first visit to America in many years, the King did not extend his journey to the West Coast to reunite with his son, Prince Harry, or his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet.
The strained relationship between Harry and his father was evident as they have had limited face-to-face interactions in recent times. The last meeting between the Duke of Sussex and his father took place in September last year during the annual WellChild awards in London.
It was predetermined months ahead of Charles’s US trip that he would not have an opportunity to meet his son, daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, or their children during the state visit. Royal commentator Jennie Bond expressed the view that Harry might have had mixed emotions witnessing his father’s highly publicized visit to the country he has called home for over six years.
Bond speculated that there remains a chance for the father and son to mend their strained relationship, possibly in private, as they work towards reconciliation after years of estrangement. She emphasized that any future meeting between them is likely to be discreet compared to the recent high-profile visit.
Although Harry stepped back from his royal duties in 2020, he shares common interests and charitable endeavors with his father. Bond pointed out that observing Charles engage in philanthropic activities in his homeland may have felt surreal for Harry, given his beliefs about the constraints of royal life.
The visit saw President Trump taking a jab at Meghan Markle, which only reinforced Harry’s decision to distance himself from the Royal Family. Bond highlighted that the visit, while improving US-UK relations, did not contribute positively to the dynamic between the President and Harry and Meghan.
Bond mentioned that Trump’s continued disparaging remarks towards the Sussexes post-visit would have further alienated the couple. Overall, while the visit had diplomatic implications, it did not aid in resolving the rift between the President and Harry and Meghan.
