The UK could face significant repercussions from the Middle East conflict comparable to Brexit, Covid, and the war in Ukraine, according to Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister cautioned that the conflict might have long-lasting effects and urged the public not to anticipate a swift return to normalcy even after the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

In an effort to fortify the nation, Starmer advocated for closer collaboration with the EU to shield against further economic upheavals. During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, he criticized the tendency to revert to the status quo after crises, which he argued hindered economic growth.

Starmer emphasized the need for a transformed, resilient, and equitable Britain capable of withstanding global shocks by bolstering the economy through investments, technology advancements, and dismantling economic barriers while fostering stronger ties with the EU. Despite recent positive economic indicators like reduced inflation and interest rate cuts, the aftermath of the conflict has led to grim economic forecasts.

Highlighting the necessity for change, Starmer emphasized the need to break away from past crisis responses that aimed at restoring the status quo, which he deemed ineffective. He stressed the importance of charting a new course in response to the current crisis to ensure sustained economic growth.

The Prime Minister underscored the significance of the current juncture in history, characterizing it as a defining moment for the generation. While expressing a commitment to keeping the UK out of war due to national interest, he acknowledged the widespread impact of the conflict on the economy and societal dynamics.
