A heroic dog in Tustin, California, named Fillmore, saved his family from a devastating electrical fire that engulfed their home. The black-and-white German short-haired pointer alerted the family by incessantly barking when he spotted flames emerging from the garage around 4:30 am. Thanks to Fillmore’s persistence, Tom Dalis, his wife, and his 90-year-old mother-in-law managed to escape the property just in time, sustaining only minor injuries.
Tom credited Fillmore for their escape, emphasizing that the dog’s unusual behavior of continuous barking at 4:15 am was the key to their survival. Although authorities suspect the fire was caused by an electrical issue, the exact cause is still under investigation. Firefighters from NBCLA swiftly extinguished the blaze, but the property and family vehicles suffered significant damage.
The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) recognized Fillmore’s heroism on Instagram, calling for the dog to receive an award. The OCFA shared details of the incident, stating that the family initially thought a neighboring house was on fire before discovering their own garage ablaze. After the fire was successfully put out, Fillmore received well-deserved attention from the firefighters who also posed for photos with the brave canine.
Additionally, the Orange City Fire Department assisted in controlling the fire. Fillmore was captured in photos proudly guarding his home and later posing with a firefighter. Videos shared by OCFA depicted the intense efforts to extinguish the flames that threatened the family’s garage.
This heartwarming story echoes a similar tale from Salford, Greater Manchester, where a family, including a newborn baby, was saved by their dog from an arson attack years ago. The family was alerted to the fire when their vigilant dog began barking, preventing a potentially disastrous outcome.
