A prominent airline has ceased operations and grounded all flights due to financial troubles. Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier known for its distinctive yellow planes and large workforce, announced a sudden shutdown, citing the need to wind down its services immediately.
Originally established as a trucking company in the 1960s, Spirit transitioned into an airline in 1983, relocating its headquarters to Florida in 1999. Despite reaching a peak in the mid-2010s with the introduction of numerous new routes and attaining a $6 billion valuation, the company has faced financial challenges in recent years.
In a statement on its website, Spirit Airlines confirmed the cancellation of all flights and the discontinuation of customer service. The airline expressed pride in its cost-effective model that influenced the industry for over three decades, regretting the abrupt end to its operations.
Customers were assured of refunds for their bookings, although no assistance would be provided for alternative travel arrangements on other airlines. The closure was anticipated after the airline failed to secure a government bailout, which President Donald Trump had proposed as a final attempt to rescue the struggling carrier.
Financial difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with escalating operating costs and mounting debt, led to Spirit filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2024, incurring substantial losses. Subsequent filings in August 2025 revealed significant debts and assets, prompting concerns from labor unions and advocates about the impact of the airline’s collapse on jobs and consumer airfare prices.
