A couple from the UK, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both aged 53 and hailing from East Sussex, have been detained in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison for 15 months now. They were convicted of espionage in what they claim was an unfair trial without the opportunity for a defense. The couple was arrested in January 2025 during a world motorcycle adventure.
During their time in captivity, their family had no communication with them and feared for their safety. Lindsay’s sons, Joe Bennett and Toby Rutland, as well as Craig’s children Kieran and Chelsea Foreman, have been actively campaigning for their release.
In a recent interview conducted over a prison payphone, Lindsay, a psychologist, shared the challenging conditions they face. She mentioned that despite trying to stay sane by walking in the prison yard, the language barrier and the harsh reality of their situation often become overwhelming. Craig, held in a separate wing, provides comfort and support to Lindsay, assuring her that they will endure the ordeal together.
Craig, who suffers from an untreated tooth abscess, highlighted the violence among inmates and the lack of medical attention in the prison. He described the distressing experience of witnessing the execution of his cellmates, who were deceived before being killed.
The Center for Human Rights in Iran reported a surge in executions in the country, with 22 people executed in the last six weeks alone. The executions were condemned as politically motivated and following unfair trials with forced confessions extracted under torture.
The psychological impact of such imprisonment was discussed by criminal psychologist Alex Iszatt, who emphasized the deliberate use of mental torture by authorities. The UK government has been actively involved in advocating for the couple’s release, denouncing their incarceration as unjust.
Former Iranian hostage Anoosheh Ashoori shed light on the dire conditions inside Evin Prison, including poor sanitation, overcrowding, and inadequate medical care. He described the oppressive environment that fostered tension and conflicts among inmates.
Lindsay’s son, Joe Bennett, has dedicated himself to securing his mother and stepfather’s freedom, facing the challenges of navigating geopolitical tensions and advocating for help.
Efforts are ongoing by the UK government, including consular assistance and diplomatic interventions, to ensure the safe return of Lindsay and Craig Foreman to the UK.
