Iranian operatives in the United Kingdom are poised to incite chaos, heightening concerns of a potential terrorist attack in the near future, as emphasized by a former police chief. The threat level was escalated to “severe,” signifying a high likelihood of an atrocity following recent incidents such as the Golders Green stabbings and a surge in antisemitic activities.
In the aftermath of the US-Israel conflict with Iran, British authorities have detained 26 individuals linked to various assaults since February 28. There are apprehensions that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps might deploy proxy groups, extremist factions, and criminal networks to target locations in European urban centers, with a primary focus on American, Jewish, and Israeli interests.
Chris Phillips, ex-head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, mentioned the impact of recent attacks on the Jewish community and highlighted a surge in hostile intentions due to the ongoing US-Iran tensions. He voiced certainty about the presence of numerous IRGC agents in the UK to incite disorder.
A newly established Iran-affiliated extremist group, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, has claimed responsibility for 15 attempted or executed firebombings aimed at Jewish properties across Britain and Europe. The UK has witnessed a gradual rise in terror threats driven by both Islamist and far-right extremism.
MI5’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the threat level to “severe” amidst a spike in antisemitic incidents following the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which led to the Israeli-Gaza conflict. The increased security measures include more armed police presence at transportation hubs and large gatherings, with businesses enhancing their security protocols.
According to terrorism expert Sajjan Gohel, the recent elevation in threat activity signifies a persistent underlying risk that has resurfaced. He highlighted the evolving landscape of threats, emphasizing the potential for lone-actor mobilization and copycat risks leading to highly likely attacks.
Gohel emphasized the complexity of the current security environment, citing global conflicts, tensions with Iran, and social media influences as factors accelerating radicalization and potential attacks. He suggested heightened vigilance in public spaces and community awareness to counter the unpredictability of threats.
The prevailing threat landscape is anticipated to remain at a heightened level for extended periods, posing a challenge for authorities in identifying individuals moving from intent to action amid a growing pool of concerns. Recent data indicates a rise in far-right extremism referrals to anti-terrorism programs compared to Islamist extremism, reflecting the evolving nature of security concerns.
Security minister Dan Jarvis advised the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed following the UK’s terror threat level adjustment. A suspect, Essa Suleiman, appeared in court charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, in what the Metropolitan Police labeled a terrorist incident. Suleiman was remanded for a future court appearance at the Old Bailey.
