Green Party leader, Zack Polanski, issued an apology for sharing a controversial social media post critiquing the police response to the Golders Green attack. Polanski acknowledged the need for leaders to maintain calm during tense situations and expressed regret for hastily sharing the tweet. He emphasized that while it is important to review police actions later on, social media is not the appropriate platform for such discussions.

Following the incident, Polanski extended an invitation to Metropolitan Police chief, Sir Mark Rowley, to engage in a dialogue regarding the police response and broader issues highlighted in his communication.

The apology came after Sir Mark strongly reacted to Polanski’s post, where the Green Party leader accused arresting officers of excessive force towards a mentally ill individual. Sir Mark cautioned that such accusations could undermine public confidence in law enforcement and criticized those offering opinions without firsthand experience.

The Metropolitan Police chief clarified that the officers’ use of force was justified due to the perceived threat of a potential explosive device following a recent terror attack. He underscored the importance of supporting police actions and addressing misinformation that could harm officer morale.

In response to the controversy, Keir Starmer condemned Polanski’s actions as “disgraceful” and questioned his suitability for a leadership role. Starmer highlighted the challenging circumstances faced by officers during the arrest and urged the public to consider the complexities of such situations.

The events unfolded just before the upcoming local elections, where the Green Party anticipates significant gains in the capital. The exchanges between Polanski, Sir Mark Rowley, and Keir Starmer underscore the delicate balance between public scrutiny, law enforcement actions, and political responsibility.
