Keir Starmer faced heckling during his visit to Golders Green to meet with emergency responders who assisted two Jewish men injured in a recent terrorist attack. Protestors expressed disapproval as the Prime Minister’s convoy arrived at a Jewish ambulance center in North London. The meeting was planned with first responders from Hatzola Northwest, a volunteer group that had its ambulances targeted in an arson incident last month.
Tensions rose outside the community center upon Mr. Starmer’s arrival, with around 50 to 60 protestors, including a group of middle-aged women singing derogatory chants and others displaying offensive signs. This incident occurred following the Prime Minister’s commitment to supporting the Jewish community after the Golders Green attack. He emphasized that combating antisemitism was a collective responsibility for everyone in the country. The Home Secretary also announced a £25 million funding boost for security to enhance police presence and safeguard synagogues, schools, and community centers.
Speaking at an event in Downing Street to address the recent attack, Mr. Starmer stressed the need for swift action against antisemitism and extremism. He underscored the importance of upholding the criminal justice system’s credibility in responding promptly to such heinous acts and reiterated solidarity with the Jewish community. The attack on the two men, aged 76 and 34, was deemed a terrorist act, prompting calls from Jewish leaders for stricter measures against antisemitic violence.
Mr. Starmer expressed concern over the ongoing attacks targeting the Jewish community, emphasizing the anxiety and insecurity felt by many. He emphasized the need for a united effort in fighting against such violence, stating that it reflects the kind of society people aspire to live in.
