Tesco has announced a significant change in its UK stores that will result in more savings for customers at the checkout. The supermarket chain will introduce its popular Aldi Price Match program to over 2,000 of its Express convenience stores, aligning prices with those of Aldi, a German discount grocer.

This move represents the largest expansion of the scheme since its launch in May 2020, aimed at addressing the increasing cost of living for many people in the UK. Over 200 items will be part of the price match initiative at Tesco Express outlets, with products like pasta, milk, lettuce, and tuna included. Customers can easily spot the Aldi Price Match logo in-store to take advantage of the discounted prices.

Ashwin Prasad, the CEO of Tesco UK, emphasized that the expansion of the scheme is intended to assist shoppers facing financial pressures. He stated, “We understand that household budgets are tight, and we are dedicated to ensuring that Tesco customers can afford their weekly grocery shopping.”

This initiative by Tesco is likely to be well-received by the three million UK households struggling with the rising cost of living, as revealed by recent research. The study by Which? showed that an increasing number of UK adults, 85% to be precise, are concerned about food prices compared to 83% in February. As a result, many households have adjusted their shopping habits to reduce expenses, such as purchasing cheaper products, opting for supermarket own-brand items, and taking advantage of promotions.

The report also highlighted that 15% of UK households are going without certain foods, and around 10% are skipping meals to manage their grocery expenses. This underscores the financial challenges faced by a significant portion of the population amid growing worries about basic living costs.
