Balancing screen time and quality family moments can be a daily challenge for many households. With children increasingly using devices for various activities like learning, socializing, gaming, and streaming, determining an appropriate limit on screen time has become more complex.

In an effort to promote open and honest discussions within families regarding online safety, The Family Chat campaign is being conducted throughout 2026 in collaboration with Tesco Mobile. Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and kids to address the challenges they encounter in the digital world and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools can be beneficial.

One of the valuable resources offered is a downloadable family pledge where families can agree on simple commitments concerning healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s online safety. Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing the rules set for screen time to adapt to the changing needs of growing children.

For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a vital role in staying connected, managing school tasks, and coping with their busy schedules. To make discussions about screen time engaging, they participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, which involved completing tasks without using phones and agreeing on commitments outlined in Tesco Mobile’s family pledge.

To maintain a healthy balance between digital engagement and real-world interactions, the Karleys plan to leverage expert advice and resources available on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub. They have already implemented a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm to prioritize family time, such as enjoying quizzes together.

In addition to these efforts, it is crucial to be cautious of certain red flags in online content, such as sensational headlines, spelling errors, and unverified sources. Teaching children how to verify social media accounts and engaging in fact-checking activities together can enhance their online safety awareness.
