Oil giant BP faced criticism after reporting nearly £2.4 billion in profits amid escalating tensions in Iran, leading to higher energy costs for households. The substantial earnings for the first quarter, averaging £365 per second, were driven by surging oil prices following the conflict’s outbreak in late February.

BP’s profits more than doubled compared to the same period last year, surpassing the £2 billion estimated by experts. Various organizations voiced concerns over the company’s gains during times of global unrest. Simon Francis from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition highlighted that energy companies benefit from conflict-driven price hikes, impacting consumers.

Maja Darlington of Greenpeace UK criticized the oil industry’s exploitation of human suffering for profit. Patrick Galey from Global Witness emphasized the distressing contrast between BP’s financial growth and the widespread consequences of geopolitical conflicts.

BP’s new CEO, Meg O’Neill, acknowledged the team’s efforts to maintain safe and efficient operations while assisting in fuel distribution to mitigate disruptions. The surge in wholesale energy prices due to the Iran conflict is expected to benefit oil companies but has resulted in higher fuel costs for consumers.

As a ripple effect, household energy bills are projected to rise, inflation to increase, and global economies, including the UK, to face repercussions. Campaigners like Robert Palmer from Uplift condemned BP’s immense profits amid public concerns over energy affordability. Additionally, concerns were raised that BP’s focus on traditional fossil fuels may hinder progress towards renewable energy sources.
