Donald Trump shared Melania’s alarming reaction when a gunman attacked during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was armed with guns and knives during the incident at the Washington Hilton.
Although the president was unharmed and quickly evacuated, the armed man, reported as a guest at the hotel hosting the dinner, was apprehended and was scheduled to appear in court the following Monday. Authorities indicated that the suspect acted alone, but did not disclose his target or motive for the attack.
Trump mentioned that it was Melania who first noticed the disturbance, describing her as “very aware” and recognizing the noise as a troubling sign. He recalled mistaking the sound for a tray dropping, realizing later that it was gunfire. Reflecting on the incident, Trump expressed shock at the unforeseen violence.
Video footage released by Trump on Truth Social captured the suspect evading security barriers as Secret Service agents pursued him. Despite one officer sustaining a gunshot to a bullet-resistant vest, the gunman was subdued without injuries and was under evaluation at a medical facility.
The suspect, Allen, was arrested and is facing multiple firearm-related charges, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. The shooting occurred just outside the event’s grand ballroom, interrupting the annual dinner intended to celebrate journalism and the First Amendment, with heightened attention due to Trump’s presence as the first sitting president to attend in years.
