A mother who lost her son and husband in the tragic OceanGate Titan disaster shared her experience of waiting anxiously for news while onboard the ship. Christine Dawood recounted the events of June 18, 2023, when her husband Shahzada Dawood, 48, and son Suleman, 19, perished along with three others during a submersible dive to explore the Titanic wreckage.
Living with her daughter in Surrey, Christine described how their family journeyed to the dive site off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, aboard the ship Polar Prince. She witnessed her loved ones depart on a dinghy towards the Titan, only to receive news of lost communication with the submersible by 11 am that day.
Despite growing concerns, Christine mentioned that the crew remained calm initially, attributing the lack of contact to common technical issues. However, as hours passed without any sign of the Titan, panic set in, leading to a search and rescue mission being launched.
During the ordeal, Christine expressed her dismay at the crew’s seemingly indifferent demeanor, as they engaged in regular activities like music sessions, movie screenings, and poker games to maintain a sense of normalcy. She felt conflicted participating in these distractions, finding it difficult to cope with the grim reality unfolding beneath the ocean’s surface.
Tragically, the sub imploded due to extreme deep-sea pressures, claiming the lives of everyone aboard, including prominent individuals like Hamish Harding, Stockton Rush, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet. Christine found solace in knowing that her family likely did not suffer during the incident, despite the devastating loss.
The discovery of the sub’s wreckage near the Titanic confirmed the tragic fate of all onboard, leaving Christine to mourn the loss of her husband and son while occasionally seeking solace in their memories.
