A woman who lost her husband and son in the tragic OceanGate Titan incident shared her relief upon learning about their fate. Shahzada Dawood, a multimillionaire aged 48, and his 19-year-old son Suleman were among the five individuals who tragically perished when the submersible collapsed while en route to explore the Titanic wreckage. Nearly three years after the event, Christine Dawood, the businessman’s widow, spoke publicly for the first time about the impact of the tragedy on her life.

Christine expressed that she continues to be affected by the disaster, experiencing distressing panic attacks. However, she found solace in knowing that her husband and son met a swift end during the catastrophic implosion on June 18, 2023. Living with her 20-year-old daughter in Surrey, Christine found some comfort in the fact that their deaths were instantaneous and devoid of prolonged suffering.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Christine described her initial reaction to the news as a sense of relief, knowing that her loved ones did not endure a slow death. She mentioned that she had initially planned to be on the submersible with her husband but ultimately allowed her son to take her place due to his fascination with the Titanic.

Reflecting on advice she received from a Canadian Coast Guard member following the search operation, Christine emphasized the importance of not dwelling on hindsight. She recalled the woman advising her to avoid falling into the trap of regret, as knowing better after the fact does not change the past.

The tragic incident also claimed the lives of British billionaire Hamish Harding, 58, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, and French diver and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77. A report released in August 2025 attributed the preventable implosion off the coast of Canada to various factors, including OceanGate’s prioritization of profits over safety and design flaws in the submersible. Coast Guard investigators concluded that the loss of lives was avoidable had proper safety measures been in place.
