“Concerns Rise Over Aggressive Pocket Bullys Amidst XL Ban”

Dog breeders are circumventing the ban on XL Bullys by promoting a smaller alternative that can be equally aggressive, as uncovered by an investigation. The rise in popularity of pocket bullys has coincided with the prohibition on XLs, leading to numerous ads on resale platforms. Despite being genetically the same as XL Bullys, experts are concerned about a potential increase in fatal attacks.

Recent events, such as the tragic death of three-month-old Maggie-May Ann Moody allegedly by a dog identified as a pocket bully-type, highlight the risks associated with these breeds. Concerned individuals have called for a ban on pocket bullys following incidents like the severe injuries inflicted on five-year-old Antonio by a pocket bully.

Pocket and XL breeds both belong to the American bulldog category, differing primarily in size. While pockets are currently lawful in the UK, they are compact yet robust dogs, typically measuring 17 inches in height and boasting a sturdy physique.

These dogs, a variation of the American Bully breed, are intentionally bred to be short and muscular by crossing Pit Bulls with smaller English Bulldogs, Patterdale Terriers, or American Staffordshire Terriers. Despite their smaller stature, pockets face various health issues due to their size and inbreeding practices.

Following a campaign, the sale of American XL Bully dogs was banned starting in 2024. Experts caution that pocket bullys, being smaller versions of XLs, possess strong biting capabilities and can be formidable animals. The proliferation of these breeds in the wrong hands, driven partly by organised crime groups seeking profit, raises concerns about potential bite incidents and behavioral problems.

While XL Bullys were involved in fewer reported deaths in recent years, other bully variants have been implicated in attacks. The continuing availability of pocket bullys through online platforms like Gumtree underscores the need for responsible ownership and proper scrutiny of breed characteristics before purchase.

Despite calls for a ban on specific breeds, some experts argue that accountability should lie with irresponsible owners rather than targeting entire breeds. The need for prosecution of irresponsible owners and effective regulation is emphasized to address the root causes of dog-related incidents. Data from police reports indicates a rise in dog attacks on individuals in England and Wales, underscoring the importance of responsible pet ownership and regulatory measures.
