The HMS Prince of Wales, a massive aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, has embarked on a new mission focused on countering Russian activities. Departing from Portsmouth, the 65,000-ton warship initiated its voyage towards the Arctic Circle, with a crew of 900 onboard. The ship will engage in joint training exercises within British waters and make a brief stop in Scotland for ammunition resupply.

Subsequently, the HMS Prince of Wales will join a multinational strike group as part of NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission. This operation aims to address the escalating Russian and Chinese presence around the North Pole. The strike group, named Operation Firecrest, will safeguard undersea infrastructure and collaborate closely with allies from the US, Canada, France, Germany, and Norway.

Recent reports have indicated a 30% surge in Russian naval activities in British waters, including the presence of suspicious vessels near critical telecommunications cables. Commander David Mason, the flagship’s Commander, expressed anticipation for the mission, highlighting the crew’s readiness to deploy alongside their air wing.

Executive Warrant Officer David Wilson echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the crew’s eagerness to return to sea duty following their recent shore leave. The UK carrier strike group, announced by Defence Secretary John Healey MP in February, underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing security in the High North and the Atlantic region.

After completing an extensive eight-month deployment to the western Indo-Pacific, the HMS Prince of Wales had been stationed at Portsmouth Naval Base since November. Equipped with Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, as well as advanced Malloy drones, the aircraft carrier set sail for its new assignment. Meanwhile, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, Britain’s other aircraft carrier, is nearing operational readiness post-maintenance at Rosyth dockyard.

Initiated in 2008 by Gordon Brown to replace the aging Invincible-class ships, the HMS Queen Elizabeth officially joined the fleet in 2017, followed by the HMS Prince of Wales two years later. These modern carriers represent a strategic asset for the UK’s maritime capabilities and defense posture.
