A woman found herself trapped for three hours in a pit of human waste when an outdoor toilet collapsed unexpectedly. The unsettling incident occurred at the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Zone, a secluded nature reserve in Australia’s Northern Territory. While stopping at the roadside restroom with her family after visiting relatives, the floor gave way due to rust damage.

The unidentified woman plunged into a latrine filled with human excrement, and with no mobile phone signal in the area, her husband and children drove to the nearest town to seek help. Eyewitnesses reported that the husband returned with a tradesman who used a rope attached to his car to pull the woman out of the pit. The rescue operation, which involved navigating through soiled diapers, feces, and urine, lasted approximately 45 minutes.

Although the woman was taken to the hospital, she fortunately did not sustain any serious injuries. Authorities have cordoned off a section of the conservation zone to investigate the cause of the structural failure. Additionally, NT WorkSafe, the state’s health and safety regulator, has initiated a probe under workplace safety laws regarding the incident, categorizing it as a “dangerous incident.”

Local reactions to the event have been critical, with community groups highlighting it as a reflection of deteriorating infrastructure in the area. This incident is not the first involving ‘drop toilets’ in Australia, as similar incidents have occurred in remote locations. One such event in July 2024 saw a man rescued near Wodonga, Victoria, after becoming stuck in a drop toilet, requiring a dismantling operation before his extraction and transfer to a hospital.
