A wealthy trophy hunter met a tragic end when he was fatally trampled by a group of five enraged elephants during a hunting expedition for antelope in Africa. Ernie Dosio, a vineyard owner known for his extensive collection of animal trophies, including elephant, rhino, bear, and more, was attacked by the elephants while pursuing a yellow backed duiker in Gabon.
Dosio, aged 75, succumbed to the attack on April 17 after the elephants ambushed him in a forest. Despite having a license for hunting in the area, Dosio was overpowered by the elephants as they defended their young calf. The massive animals, known for their size and speed, caught Dosio off guard, resulting in a fatal outcome.
Following the tragic incident, Dosio’s body is being repatriated to California where he resided with his partner and children. The vineyard owner was a prominent figure in the wine industry, owning a significant vineyard in Modesto through his company, Pacific AgriLands Inc. His contributions to the local wine community were substantial, with his family deeply involved in the business operations.
A retired hunter who knew Dosio described him as a seasoned and licensed hunter, emphasizing his commitment to conservation efforts through regulated hunting practices. Dosio’s passion for hunting and charity work left a lasting impact on those who knew him, with his sudden demise deeply felt in both the US and Africa.
The hunting community and local organizations mourn Dosio’s passing, acknowledging his dedication to wildlife and community support. Despite his controversial hobby, Dosio’s charitable contributions and genuine character endeared him to many, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew him well.
