An individual labeled as an “Islamophobe” and considered a significant threat to women has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and religiously motivated mistreatment of a Sikh woman. John Ashby, aged 32, pursued the victim from a bus and forcibly entered her residence in Walsall, West Midlands, last October, wielding a stick. During the distressing incident, he subjected the woman to a series of Islamophobic insults, mistakenly assuming she was Muslim.
At Birmingham Crown Court, Mr. Justice Pepperall handed Ashby a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years, denouncing him as a “deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe” who poses a severe risk to women. Ashby, without a fixed address, pleaded guilty to charges of rape, robbery, intentional strangulation, and religiously aggravated assault during his trial.
The prosecutor described how Ashby, despite the victim’s pleas, physically and verbally assaulted her, inflicting racial and religious abuse throughout the ordeal. The court was shown distressing police footage where the victim, consoled by a female officer, recounted the harrowing experience of being attacked in her bathroom.
The victim, in a recorded interview, detailed the terrifying encounter with Ashby, who berated her with derogatory remarks and violent actions before fleeing upon hearing a noise outside. She expressed feeling violated and traumatized, struggling with panic attacks and requiring medication to cope with daily life.
The victim’s partner highlighted the impact of the incident on their lives, both experiencing emotional distress and anxiety. During sentencing, the judge emphasized aggravating factors such as Ashby’s criminal history, substance abuse, and the psychological impact on the victim’s sense of security.
In a show of support, the judge commended the victim for her bravery and hoped for her and her partner’s recovery. Following the verdict, Senior Crown Prosecutor Rav Dhillon condemned the attack as a deeply disturbing act fueled by religious animosity, targeting an innocent woman in her own home. Dabinderjit Singh OBE, a representative from the Sikh Federation (UK), praised the court’s decision to impose a life sentence on Ashby, underscoring the severity of his racist actions and sending a clear message to perpetrators of violent racism.
