Two fathers, who tragically lost their daughters in the Southport tragedy, have formed a strong bond through their shared love of running, likening their relationship to that of brothers. They are gearing up to participate in the upcoming London Marathon together.
The devastating incident in July 2024 claimed the lives of Alice Da Silva Aguiar, aged nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, and Bebe King, aged six, during an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event. Last year, Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe individually ran the London Marathon in memory of their daughters. This year, they are joining forces as friends to run the marathon side by side.
Expressing their deepening friendship, David stated, “Last year we participated as two fathers, and this time we’re participating as two friends. Our closeness motivated us to run together.” Sergio dedicated his 2025 London Marathon run to fundraising for a new playground at Alice’s school, while David ran for Elsie’s Story, a charity established in his daughter’s honor. Running has become a therapeutic outlet for them, allowing them to pay tribute to their beloved daughters.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Sergio shared, “Running has been a source of solace for me on dark days. After a run, I always feel uplifted, and it has been incredibly beneficial for me.” David emphasized that his focus is not on speed but on personal growth through running.
The significance of running the marathon together as a symbol of their brotherly bond was highlighted by Sergio, who expressed how important it was to him. David echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the strong connection they share. They aim to support each other and enjoy the race while honoring their daughters.
Inspired by Sergio’s marathon achievements, including completing six major marathons in 12 months for Alice’s WonderDance foundation, David expressed pride in Sergio’s dedication. Sergio’s goal of completing marathons in Berlin, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, and Boston was commended by David.
With Sergio’s experience in marathon running, the duo humorously discussed whether David could keep pace. Sergio quipped about providing support, while David responded with a jest about their running dynamics.
