Downing Street has responded to Donald Trump’s threat to reconsider the UK’s claim to the Falkland Islands. The UK government reiterated that the territory’s sovereignty belongs to the UK following the US President’s recent announcement. Trump is contemplating punitive actions against Britain for not aligning with US interests in the tumultuous Iran conflict, as per a leaked Pentagon email suggesting measures to rebuke Nato allies for insufficient Middle East support, including reassessing diplomatic backing for European territories like the Falklands.
A spokesperson from No10 emphasized the UK’s unwavering stance on the Falkland Islands, affirming that the UK maintains sovereignty over the region, and the islanders’ right to self-determination is fundamental and will be consistently upheld. The spokesperson underlined that the UK’s ability to defend the islands is not a current concern but a hypothetical scenario.
Despite Trump’s statements, the UK stands firm on its Iran strategy, unaffected by the President’s remarks. Argentina claims sovereignty over the islands, also known as Las Malvinas, which are under UK administration. Noteworthy is the US support for the UK during the Falklands War in 1982, where casualties were reported on both sides.
The leaked memo also discussed the possibility of ejecting Spain from Nato following Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez’s opposition to Operation Epic Fury against Iran. Additionally, Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on the UK if it maintains a digital services tax on American social media companies, introduced in 2020, which imposes a 2% levy on major US tech firms’ revenues.
During a press briefing, Trump indicated a potential tariff on the UK if the tax issue persists. The internal Pentagon email proposing a review of support for European territories was linked to Trump’s discontent with Nato and his assertion of self-sufficiency in dealing with Iran.
Further reports suggested considerations of withdrawing US troops from Europe. When questioned about the memo, Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson reiterated Trump’s stance on Nato allies and emphasized the need for credible options to ensure ally cooperation.
