Sir Keir Starmer is preparing for a challenging session of Prime Minister’s Questions today in the midst of the ongoing Peter Mandelson vetting controversy. Former Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins revealed on Tuesday that there was significant pressure to approve Mandelson’s appointment as UK ambassador to Washington DC, despite reservations about the process.

Robbins, who was recently dismissed, testified before the Foreign Affairs Committee that there was a push from No 10 to have Mandelson in the US as quickly as possible, showing disregard for the vetting procedures. While No 10 denied these allegations, Starmer has been under pressure from both Labour MPs and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

The scandal surrounding the appointment has become a major issue for the Prime Minister ahead of the upcoming local elections, where Labour is expected to face significant challenges. Pat McFadden, a former Cabinet Office minister, clarified that he did not advocate for Mandelson to be appointed without proper vetting procedures.

In a separate development, Angela Rayner warned about the potential domestic repercussions of the conflict in Iran, calling on the Government to take decisive action to address issues related to water, housing, and energy costs. She emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict on the UK population.

Additionally, Cabinet minister Pat McFadden refrained from directly commenting on the fairness of Starmer’s decision to dismiss Sir Olly Robbins, stating his support for the Prime Minister’s judgment. The controversy surrounding the vetting process for Peter Mandelson has intensified, with Robbins accusing No 10 of disregarding the necessity of vetting the appointee before sending him to Washington.

Sir Olly Robbins highlighted the potential security risks posed by the leak of the vetting findings and shared other concerning revelations during his testimony before the Foreign Affairs Committee. The situation has put further pressure on Starmer, who is already facing challenges in managing the fallout from the controversy.

Overall, these developments underscore the complex and politically charged environment surrounding the handling of key appointments and decisions within the UK government.
