A young woman, Sumbul Ari, discovered she had cancer at the age of 26 despite being initially told by doctors that her severe skin itching was due to dryness and just required moisturizing. Sumbul took matters into her own hands after enduring intense symptoms for nearly a year, where the itching was so severe that it affected her ability to sleep.
She described feeling as if there were things moving under her skin, and the incessant itching prevented her from getting a full night’s rest for seven months. Despite her distress, medical professionals attributed her symptoms to dry skin and recommended moisturizing.
Convinced that there was a deeper issue at play, Sumbul turned to online research and was alarmed to find that her symptoms aligned with a type of cancer, a diagnosis later confirmed by doctors. She recounted her frustration with doctors dismissing her symptoms as dry skin, scabies, or eczema, while she experienced uncontrollable itching, night sweats, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
Her search for answers intensified when she felt a lump on her neck, prompting her to suspect she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Following a doctor’s visit on March 4, and subsequent tests, Sumbul’s fears were confirmed on March 17 by a hematologist who diagnosed her with cancer.
Tests revealed multiple enlarged lymph nodes in her neck, chest, and spleen, placing her cancer between stages two and three. Sumbul has since completed one round of chemotherapy with five more to go, expressing relief that her condition was finally acknowledged and treated.
She emphasized the importance of advocating for oneself when health concerns are dismissed, urging others not to ignore persistent symptoms.
