A young baby girl tragically lost her life in a devastating incident involving a suspected pocket bully-type dog, and she has now been publicly identified for the first time.
The infant, named Maggie May Ann Moody, passed away at a residence in Redcar, North Yorkshire, on April 9, just one day shy of her third month. The coroner at the inquest noted that the provisional cause of death was attributed to a “head injury.”
The unfortunate event unfolded shortly after Maggie’s birth on January 10 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Although two dogs were implicated in the attack, it remains uncertain which dog was responsible for the fatal injuries sustained by the baby.
Law enforcement officers from Cleveland Police intervened swiftly, shooting one of the dogs on the spot and detaining the other, which was later euthanized. Local residents referred to the dogs involved as “pocket bullys.”
While the police have refrained from disclosing the specific breed of the dogs, they have clarified that the dogs were legally owned. Following the incident, three individuals were apprehended and subsequently released on bail pending further investigations.
During the inquiry, the coroner, Mr. Appleton, outlined the sequence of events following the tragic occurrence. Emergency services were summoned on April 9, 2026, due to a distress call reporting a child being attacked by a dog at a residence in Hardale Drive, Redcar.
Eyewitnesses in the neighborhood recounted how authorities advised people to seek refuge in cars, houses, or gardens to evade a dog that was roaming the area. Scarlett Calvert, a resident, recalled returning home to witness a large police presence and chaos unfolding, with one of the dogs managing to escape temporarily.
In the midst of the turmoil, a 31-year-old woman sustained an arm injury from a dog bite and received medical treatment at a local hospital.
