Starting tomorrow, new regulations in the European Union may result in pet owners facing challenges at the border. Significant alterations are on the horizon regarding the necessary steps for traveling with pets.
Under the post-Brexit agreements, individuals journeying into the European Union from England, Scotland, or Wales with their dogs, cats, or ferrets will no longer have the option to utilize EU pet passports. The longstanding practice of using EU Pet Passports for pet travel, whether by air, sea, or land, will be void as EU Regulation 2016/429, also known as the Animal Health Law, takes effect following a decade-long transition period.
Consequently, travelers embarking from Great Britain to an EU nation alongside their pets must acquire an animal health certificate (AHC) prior to departure. A veterinarian must issue this certificate within 10 days of travel, and a new certificate is mandatory for each trip from Britain to the EU.
The AHC remains valid for up to six months for intra-EU travel and reentry into Britain, provided that rabies vaccinations are current. Additionally, the rules extend to assistance dogs. Failure to comply with the new requirements could lead to pets being denied entry into the EU.
Notably, pet passports will now only be issued to EU residents, excluding holiday homeowners and seasonal visitors. Specific pet travel prerequisites may vary among member states, underscoring the importance of verifying entry requirements before travel. Nonetheless, British travelers can continue using EU pet passports for their return to the UK.
Exceptions might be considered for pets traveling to competitions, events, or training. Despite these changes, the Animal and Plant Health Agency reassures pet owners that holidays with pets are still feasible. To ensure a smooth journey and prevent delays, pet owners residing in Great Britain are advised to obtain an Animal Health Certificate when traveling to an EU country.
