A recent survey has revealed that a majority of voters approve of Keir Starmer’s responses to the Iran conflict involving Donald Trump. The survey also assessed Starmer’s performance on various critical issues affecting the UK.
In a positive development for Downing Street amidst lower approval ratings for the Prime Minister, Starmer’s recent international actions have garnered significant support from the public. Conversely, voters expressed concerns about Nigel Farage potentially mishandling the Iran conflict compared to other party leaders.
The Good Growth Foundation released a report based on the survey results, suggesting the utilization of defense expenditure to bridge the gap between Starmer’s international popularity and his domestic challenges. The report proposes the implementation of a paid “defense foundation year” program for young adults to facilitate skilled employment opportunities and advocates for prioritizing British firms in defense contracts.
Among the surveyed issues, Starmer’s decisions to stay neutral in the Iran conflict, maintain a reserved stance towards President Trump, and foster closer relations with the EU received the highest approval ratings. Notably, 43% of respondents believed Starmer made the correct choices regarding the conflict.
While Starmer’s foreign policy decisions were well-received, the survey highlighted the need for improvement in his handling of domestic issues to gain wider public support. Specifically, respondents were less confident in Starmer’s approach towards addressing the cost of living crisis, immigration matters, and the UK economy, with the NHS ranking fourth in approval.
Regarding other party leaders’ perceived effectiveness in handling the Iran conflict, a significant portion of respondents expressed doubts about Nigel Farage’s capabilities, while opinions on Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, Lib Dem Ed Davey, and Green leader Zack Polanski varied.
Louisa Dollimore, Director of Strategy at The Good Growth Foundation, emphasized the importance of leveraging foreign policy successes to drive positive changes domestically. Dollimore highlighted defense policy as a strategic avenue to enhance national resilience, support skilled workforce development, bolster British businesses, and safeguard against cyber threats.
The survey conducted by GGF Insights polled 2,006 British adults online, with data collection spanning from March 27 to April 3, 2026. The results were weighted to ensure national and political representativeness across various demographic factors.
In conclusion, the public perceives Starmer’s foreign policy initiatives favorably, signaling an opportunity to translate international successes into tangible benefits for the domestic landscape through strategic defense policies and investments.
