Britain’s inaugural chip vending machine has been revealed, offering a convenient way to grab a meal by simply tapping a screen. Captain Chip’s self-serve vending machine, priced at £2.99, is now operational in Wrexham city center, with plans for additional machines in London. The chips are served in a box, and customers can choose to have them salted or accompanied by ketchup. This innovative concept has garnered mixed reactions from shoppers, with some calling it “ridiculous.”
According to Captain Chip’s management, the machine has received a positive response thus far. A spokesperson mentioned, “Wrexham was chosen as the ideal location to introduce this concept.” The Eagles Meadow shopping center in Wrexham was selected due to its community-centric nature, fitting seamlessly into moments where individuals seek a quick and satisfying hot snack without waiting in lines or committing to a sit-down meal.
The installation of the Captain Chip vending machine in Wrexham represents a pioneering move in the realm of automated food experiences, positioning the North Wales city at the forefront of the trend that merges convenience with quality. The machine operates autonomously without the need for constant staffing.
While some shoppers find the chips relatively expensive compared to traditional chip shops, others appreciate the convenience, especially when faced with closed stores. Despite differing opinions, there is a humorous side to the situation, with one shopper joking about the person inside the machine peeling potatoes all day.
The introduction of the chip vending machine comes as energy costs and fish prices surge, leading to a significant increase in the cost of the UK’s beloved fish and chips dish. Between 2019 and 2024, the average price of fish and chips in the UK surged by 52%, reaching an average of £9.88 and exceeding £15 in select premium locations.
